Iron replacement precipitation method is a simple and easy process to extract copper sponge from copper solutions.

Typical replacement solution is dilute sulfuric acid solutions containing Cu­­2+, under normal circumstances there are the following chemical reactions:

Cu­­2++Fe=Cu+Fe2+………………………………………………………………………… (1)

Fe+2H+=Fe2++H2↑ ……………………………………………………………………… (2)

(1) formula is purpose of replacement process, (2) formula is inevitable side reactions.

Fe+1/2O2+2H+=Fe2++H2O………………………………………………………………… (3)
